The Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro has the mission of preserving, the reflection and diffusion of production of national and international modern and contemporary art, through exhibitions of its collection, publications and lending of works. Therefore, it promotes debate around the topic, organizes and makes its collection available in a digital database to researchers in general, contributes to the education of the public through special visits to schools and the general public; promotes viewing the showing of films of artistic and cultural interest and develops programs that provide scholarships to artists in Brazil and abroad.

MAM and the vanguard art of Brazilian art

Contemporary of the artistic movements that have shaken the country since 1950, MAM saw the birth, launching and release of much of modern and contemporary artists who now populate the international art circuit. It is a place for reflection, debate and objections after the leaden years of military dictatorship. 

It holds a collection of visual arts, film and documents, including the arts collection of Gilberto Chateaubriand,with about 4,000 items, and the photograph collection of the diplomatJoaquim Paiva, both deposited on loan.

As a future goal, there is the promise of renewal and reopening of its library to meet one of the essential functions of the whole museum: research. Award winner of the Bravo Bradesco Prime Culture –2012 in the category “best cultural programming”, for the exhibitions held in the period assessed by the jury of the award: the retrospectives of Alberto Giacometti and Louise Bourgeois, the panoramic views of Nan Goldin, the largest ever made about photography in the country; “That’s how it is!”, with highlights of the international collection of the museum, and the commemorating of the centennial of John Cage.
